Communities
Thank you to all of the families for
responding to our ‘Baby Needed’ call. We
are happy to let you know – we have a baby for our Roots of Empathy program! At
the heart of the ROE program is a ROE baby and parent(s) who visit the
classroom once every 3 weeks (9 times over the school year). Our ROE family is Julie and Jeff Pleskach and
baby Rowan. The program will be
delivered by Ms. Stewart in Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Reder’s grade 2
classroom.
Through these classroom visits, the
students observe the baby's development and learn to identify and reflect on
their own feelings and the feelings of others.
Ms. Stewart will coach the children in observing the baby and reading
the cues the baby gives as to how the baby is feeling: “Is the baby happy or
sad?” “How can you tell?” We will use this discussion as a lever for the
children to talk about their own emotions and to understand how their
classmates feel: “Do you smile when you’re happy?” “How can you tell if your
friend is happy?” Being able to understand how other people are feeling is
called empathy. Ms. Stewart will also visit the classroom before and after each
family visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson for
each visit. For more than ten years
across Canada and internationally, thousands of children have learned respect
and care for one another with the lessons started through their Roots of
Empathy baby. Linden Meadows School is
excited to be a part of this program!
